25 chocolate sandwich cookies, such as Oreos, plus more crumbs for serving
6 Tbsp. salted butter, melted
1/4 c. raspberries, plus more for serving
3 Tbsp. granulated sugar
2 (6-oz.) containers of raspberry yogurt
1 (3.4-oz) package of instant vanilla pudding mix
1 c. heavy whipping cream
Whipped cream, to serve
Directions
1. To make the crust, preheat the oven to 350°F. Crush the cookies in a food processor (or smash them in a zip-top bag with a rolling pin). Stir in the melted butter until all combined. Pour into a regular pie pan and press the crumbs all over the pan and up the sides. Bake for 3 to 6 minutes—just long enough for it to set. Cool the crust completely.
2. Place raspberries on a plate or in an empty pan. Smash them with a fork, then sprinkle on the sugar. Stir it all together and allow to sit for 15 minutes.
3. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the yogurt with the pudding mix (just the powder itself). Beat on low speed until combined, about 1 minute. Pour in the cream and whip on low speed for 30 seconds. Stop the mixer and scrape down the bowl with a rubber spatula. Turn the mixer on medium-high speed and beat until the mixture is thick, 2 minutes.
4. Turn off the mixer, then fold in the raspberries until just combined. Pour into the cooled pie pan and spread evenly. Freeze until very firm, 2 hours. Cut into slices and top each slice with cookie crumbs, dollops of whipped cream, and extra raspberries. Keep in the freezer, allowing time to thaw before serving.

In 1486, fireworks lit up the skies in England, celebrating the wedding of King Henry VII. It was the first time local crowds delighted in these sparkling, dazzling pyrotechnic displays at a national celebration. It was only the beginning. Europeans were enchanted by their introduction to fireworks from China – it’s no wonder that European settlers brought their love of fireworks displays with them to the new world.
History: In China, people had been making “firecrackers” since the second century BCE by tossing bamboo into fires – the air trapped inside them would expand, heated by the fire, causing an “explosion” and a loud “bang!” Later, when they developed gunpowder between 600-900 CE, they quickly made improvements to their bamboo firecrackers, adding gunpowder for a bigger bang, then iron and steel shavings for sparkle. Today, most fireworks are still made in China, and they have mastered the art of oooos and ahhhhs.
Independence Day: Fireworks have been part of Independence Day celebrations from the very first celebrations in Philadelphia in 1777 – in addition to flag ceremonies, parades, music, carnivals, and cookouts. Today, millions continue to celebrate with local parades and carnivals, cookouts with family and friends or festivals with street foods and refreshments, and public fireworks displays in communities across the country.
Looking Ahead: While originally shown as royal displays, safer fireworks, and public demand have resulted in relaxed laws around consumer fireworks in many areas, and consumer fireworks sales have now far surpassed display sales. Since 1970 toxic materials like lead have been removed, bases have been stabilized, and wicks are more uniform and reliable, all preventing many of the safety incidents of the past. But while countless consumers are overjoyed to have access to their own private fireworks celebrations, emergency responders caution us that although beautiful, fireworks are still dangerous, causing significant increases in emergency room visits and fire response calls every year around this time.
There are additional concerns as well, for example, dry conditions necessitating burn-bans, air quality impact, and the rising costs of display fireworks.
It’s unclear the future of fireworks displays, some communities are increasing their displays, making them bigger and better than ever before, while others are canceling them altogether. Some localities are exploring light displays and drone shows, and some are considering changing the nature of future celebrations, imagining something completely new.
Whatever the future holds, it’s easy to appreciate the impact this tradition has had across the globe, bringing communities together in fun and celebration.

The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, is one of the most cherished holidays in the United States. It’s a day filled with patriotism, fireworks, and festivities. But beyond the barbecues and parades, it’s important to remember the historical significance of this day and why we celebrate it.
The History and Significance of the Fourth of July
The Fourth of July marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. On this day, the thirteen American colonies declared their independence from British rule, setting the foundation for the United States of America.
Key Historical Points:
The Declaration of Independence: Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration outlined the colonies’ grievances against King George III and expressed their desire for self-governance.
Continental Congress: The Declaration was ratified by the Second Continental Congress, a group of representatives from the thirteen colonies.
Birth of a Nation: The adoption of the Declaration of Independence symbolized the birth of a new nation based on principles of freedom, equality, and democracy.
Why We Celebrate
Independence Day is more than just a historical event; it is a celebration of American values and freedoms. It’s a time to reflect on the nation’s history, honor those who have fought for our liberties, and come together as a community to celebrate what makes the United States unique.
Themes of Celebration:
Patriotism: Displaying the American flag, singing the national anthem, and participating in patriotic events.
Community: Engaging in community events like parades, fairs, and fireworks shows.
Freedom and Democracy: Reflecting on the principles of freedom and democracy that underpin the nation’s identity.
Fun Activities to Celebrate the Fourth of July
Whether you’re planning a big bash or a small gathering, here are some fun activities to make your Fourth of July celebration memorable:
1. Fireworks Display
No Fourth of July celebration is complete without fireworks. Check out local fireworks shows or set off your own (where permitted). Remember to follow safety guidelines and local regulations. In Lake of the Woods, we have an all-day celebration complete with a parade, festival, waterski show, and of course, fireworks! This year, it will be held on Saturday, July 6th.
2. Barbecue Party
Host a classic Fourth of July barbecue with friends and family. Grill up some burgers, hot dogs, and corn on the cob. Don’t forget the red, white, and blue desserts!
3. Parades and Festivals
Attend a local parade or festival. Many towns and cities host parades featuring marching bands, floats, and patriotic displays. It’s a great way to show your patriotism and enjoy the community spirit.
4. Patriotic Crafts
Get crafty with the kids by making patriotic decorations. Create American flag banners, star-spangled wreaths, and red, white, and blue tie-dye shirts. It’s a fun and creative way to get into the holiday spirit.
5. Outdoor Games
Organize some outdoor games like sack races, tug-of-war, and water balloon fights. These activities are perfect for a backyard party and will keep both kids and adults entertained.
6. Historical Reenactments and Educational Activities
Visit local museums or historical sites to learn more about the American Revolution and the founding of the United States. Many places offer special programs and reenactments on the Fourth of July.
7. Patriotic Music Playlist
Create a playlist of patriotic songs to set the mood for your celebration. Include classics like “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “America the Beautiful,” and “God Bless America.”
8. Picnic in the Park
Pack a picnic and head to a local park. Enjoy the great outdoors, play some frisbee or soccer, and soak up the sun. Many parks also host special Fourth of July events.
The Fourth of July is a day to celebrate the freedoms and values that define the United States. Whether you’re watching fireworks, hosting a barbecue, or participating in community events, take a moment to reflect on the historical significance of this day. Enjoy the festivities, cherish the time with loved ones, and remember the importance of independence and democracy.
