The company planning to develop a solar farm here in Locust Grove will be holding a second public meeting on the project tomorrow, Tuesday January 29th at 5:30pm at the Wilderness Branch Library.
A 400-acre 62-megawatt solar farm has been proposed for Locust Grove along Route 20 (less than a mile west of Locust Grove Primary and Elementary Schools). Citizens now have until January 30th to submit any comments or concerts. This is part of a mandatory 30-day public review period, allowing time for the public who may be affected by the construction, to voice their opinions. This 400-acres of 630 acres that Cypress Creek Renewable owns, would be this county’s first large-scale solar farm. Before Cypress Creek can begin construction on this project later this year and begin operations in 2020, the Virginia DEQ (VA Department of Environmental Quality) must review the company’s Permit by Rule application (400 pages). There are 15 total requirements that must be met including a $12,000 application fee paid by the developer.
You can review Cypress Creek’s Permit by Rule application online or at the Wilderness Public Library. Development coordinator, Haley Larabee proposes that this operation will produce enough clean and renewable energy to power about 10,000 single family homes. And what about the real estate market? Larabee says, “studies by our appraiser have shown that there’s no negative effect on the property value of surrounding uses.”

Family nights are important! In a world filled with social media and technology, work and sports ruling everyone, our lives can appear busier than they probably are. Please plan to join the Civic Club in the Clubhouse Great Hall on Wednesday, January 16th, at 7pm. Jessie Graves, LOWA Director of Facilities, will be filling us is on what’s happening within the LOWA Maintenance Department. Jessie will provide information on the department organization and structure, lakes management, road maintenance, and the general maintenance program of work slated for 2019. She will also be happy to answer questions regarding the CARC project.
Jessie has been with the Maintenance Department for ten years. She has served as the Director of Facilities since 2014. She started her career at LOWA as the Erosion and Sediment Inspector in 2008, having gotten to know many members during the process of mapping the water flow on all LOW properties. In December 2012, she took over as the Environmental Resources Manager (aka Lakes Manager).
Jessie earned her B.S. in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University and began her working career monitoring ground water runoff from solid waste facilities. Growing up on a farm, she was introduced to construction through her father’s excavation business. Her interest in construction and environmental sciences was a natural choice.
Jessie manages with a results-oriented style, working with her staff to ensure the desired results are realized. She is proud of the spirit of cooperation among the Maintenance employees.
There will be time allotted for questions, so please bring yours! We look forward to seeing you on January 16thin the Clubhouse Great Hall at 7pm.
