The final 2 nights are coming up quickly for the Holiday Movie Series event hosted by the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation & Events Center. Come out to Old Mill Park (location subject to change) for a FREE family movie night in the park. There will be food trucks available for dinner and the movie will be played through your car radio. I love the diversity of Virginia, especially Fredericksburg/Orange county areas; I find it surprising when people say it’s “boring”. Here at Lake of the Woods we are so close to so many other different local areas: including Culpeper, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania. There’s plenty to do – some things are even free. Explore downtown Culpeper or Fredericksburg, on a warm sunny day; adventure out of the house for a little bit during the cold Christmas season too! Just dress warm, of course – but don’t let it hold you back from a beautiful brisk night out on the town. The immediate counties and towns by Lake of the Woods are full of beautiful holiday decorations and lights – and it doesn’t cost a dime to enjoy them (other than a little bit of gas, if they’re not within your walking distance).
In addition to the historic downtown areas, Culpeper, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and even Orange all have many battlefield sites; did you know there’s a pyramid in Fredericksburg? I sure didn’t until one of my best friend’s took me there and now, I can’t help but mention it whenever someone suggests there’s nothing here to do. There are so many different battlefields spread throughout the area, if you feel like adventuring outside and learning some history, you will have many options! So check out: Meade’s Pyramid to start, Wilderness Battlefield, and the Spotsylvania Battlefield to name a few. With some detailed research you can certainly plan a day trip or even a whole weekend, if you’re really feeling adventurous!
Right in Orange, Virginia (less than a 40 minute drive from Lake of the Woods) is the Inn at Willow Grove, if you fancy a nice meal while you’re out. The grounds are beautiful and right down the road is James Madison’s Montpelier and Museum; if you’re looking for a ‘boozier’ adventure, try taking a wine trail tour. There are multiple wineries, cideries, breweries and distilleries between Fredericksburg and Charlottesville, Virginia. Check out the popular wineries and breweries in Orange and if you visit – let us know what you think!
If you’re up for spending a little bit of money and going on a drive, there are a couple drive-thru movie theaters I would highly recommend! Check out my reviews here. And they’re less than 2 hours away from Lake of the Woods.
There’s also the classic bowling or dinner and a movie! Most notably in Fredericksburg and Culpeper. Fredericksburg holds a unique establishment in which, they have bowling, pool tables, a restaurant and a movie theater all in one – there’s certainly no room for boredom there. Both Fredericksburg and Culpeper are only about a 30-minute drive from Lake of the Woods. The drive is beautiful especially in the fall, when the trees alongside Route 3 are starting to change.
It’s always nice to window shop around the local Spotsylvania mall, or antique shop in downtown Culpeper, Orange or Fredericksburg. In the warmer days it’s even more enjoyable to visit the local parks and downtown shops, especially if you have a fur-friend to bring along! Many local area businesses are dog-friendly (especially in downtown Fredericksburg) it only takes a quick moment to look them up before you bring Fido to make sure he/she will be allowed inside.
One place Fido is always welcome: the Shenandoah National Park! They have many hiking trails and lodging available for you and your companion(s) among the mountains. The best part is that it’s only a 45-minute drive from Culpeper and from Fredericksburg, less than a 2-hour drive. It’s certainly an adventurous way to spend the day with your best pal(s).

You don’t have to travel back in time to enjoy a drive-in movie theater anymore! They’re back and they’re here to stay. If you’ve never been to one before or have kids or grand-kids that have never been, it is worth taking them to a movie experience like this. Both theaters I will tell you about are very family-friendly and have parks available for children to play while waiting for the movies to begin.
Only an hour and a few minutes away from Lake of the Woods, Virginia is the Goochland Drive-In Theater, located at 4344 Old Fredericksburg Rd, Hadensville, VA 23067. This theater was started many years ago by a young family that wanted an affordable, family-friendly environment for the community to enjoy.
About an additional 30-40 minute drive than the Goochland Drive-In from Lake of the Woods is the Family Drive-In located at: 5890 Valley Pike, Stephens City, VA 22655. They opened in 1956 and are continuing 63 years of operation as of next year – wow! So really- they never “left”.
Both drive-ins offer two screens as well as the option for double-features or single features, and they are pet-friendly! They both allow you to bring folding chairs and blankets, if you’d rather sit outside of your vehicle and offer portable radios to listen to the movie. They both have snack bars with classic snacks and drinks available for purchase. Goochland Drive-In does not allow outside foods to be brought in, while the Family Drive-In will allow outside foods for a small fee.
Goochland’s prices for adults and children 12+ are $8.50 each compared to the Family Drive-In at $8 each for the same ages. Kids 4-11 $4 each at both. For Family Drive-In’s single feature price and Sundays, it’s $7 for adults and children 12 and up, while children 3-11 are $3 each. What a bargain! Double feature movies at a DRIVE-IN theater for the same price as a 1 movie ticket at a regular movie theater, how can you even compare?!

Unfortunately, the season has come to an end, of course, due to colder weather in December, January and February, in Virginia. The season will start again in March.
