The festival will be held by the Lake of the Woods Golf Center on Saturday, October 20th. Golf will begin at 9 AM, sharp. Sign up at the Pro Shop to register to golf. The cost will be $35 per person. Festivities will be from 12:30pm to 5pm. The music is free for all to enjoy and will be performed by: Oompah Band. There will be German Food & Beer as well as prizes for the most skilled for the featured games that will be played. The Library of Congress Packard Campus that houses the Library of Congress’ Recorded Sound and Moving Images collections and holds film, audio and video preservation laboratories, is hosting their annual open house. Fans of the Library of Congress, native Virginians, film and music enthusiasts, and any one interested in visiting the unique building are encouraged to come to the open house! This year they will focus on how education and training led employees of Packard Campus to their careers within the Library of Congress! Children and school groups are welcome to participate in the Open house Activities! Any slower moving guests and their companions are invited to take the 1:15pm or 1:30pm tour as they will move at a slower pace during this tour and have additional staff available for assistance. This is a free event and the tour is lead by the Packard Campus staff. The guided tour will take you through all 3 floors of the building and will take approximately 1 hour to complete. The tour is free but tickets through EVENTBRITE are required. Only those with a ticket from eventbrite are guaranteed to be on a tour. Walk-ins will be accommodated IF there are spaces available and will have to wait a few hours longer to go on the tour. Tours are limited to 34 people PER start time. Tickets are available until 9am on Monday, October 8th. You do not have to print the ticket as your name will be saved to their computer. Please do not arrive at the Campus more than 30 minutes prior to your scheduled tour. There are only 134 parking spaces so carpooling is highly recommended by the Campus staff. The staff advises that the Campus is chilly year round and it’s recommended that you bring a sweater or a light jacket for your comfort, as well as comfortable walking shoes. You cannot bring large bags into the building, so please leave them in your vehicle or at home. There are metal detectors you have to walk through each time you enter so it’s best to limit what you bring into the building. Security will check the contents of EVERY bag and item taken IN/OUT of the building. 2018 Cigar, Bourbon and Beer Festival in Fredericksburg VA!
This years Cigar, Bourbon and Beer Festival will be held on Saturday, August 18th from 4pm to 9pm at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds (2400 Airport Ave, Fredericksburg VA 22401). Gates open at 4pm! Hogshead Cigar Lounge will be present and showcasing a variety of cigars from their lounge. Friends of Wilderness Battlefield hosting their 2nd Annual Canoe Trip!
Saturday, August 25th, National Park Service Historian: Greg Mertz will be leading a day-trip canoe tour of Civil War sites along the Rapidan River. He will be narrating and bringing to life Stonewall Jackson, George Custer and J.E.B Stewart, to name a few.
You will have the opportunity to visit these historic crossing sites – many that are not easily accessible by land.
Plan to be on the water ALL day – so bring lunch, a cooler, sunscreen, wipes, any medication you require along with any other necessities you would need for the day. The terrain is rugged and possibly damp, so be prepared and dress accordingly.
The trip will begin at Ely’s Ford at 8:30AM, SHARP and you will be transported to Germanna and float back to Ely’s Ford with an estimated arrival time of 3PM.
There is a limit of 15 canoes (29 participants, plus the host, Greg).
The cost is $50, with Friends of Wilderness Battlefield receiving about half of the $50. If you want to be paired with a friend or someone in particular, please let them know that upon signing up and registering.

Civic Club Hosts Reception for LOWA BOD Candidates by Pat Licata, President
Please join the Civic Club on Wednesday, July 11th, at 5:30 PM, as we host a Reception for the Candidates in the Great Hall of the Clubhouse. We encourage you to mingle with the candidates from 5:30-6pm, with the forum beginning at 6pm. Each candidate will have 2-3 minutes to deliver his/her message to the audience. A cash bar will be available, and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
The Lake of the Woods Board candidates are Heidi Brown, Pete Brown, Ralph Debnam, Walt Diercks, Bill Feterle, Bill Logan, Allen Priester, and Adrien Terrenoiere. The candidates will be vying for 3 Board of Directors vacancies on the 7 member Board. LOWA will mail ballots to lot owners near the end of July and the balloting will conclude on September 1st at the Association’s Annual Meeting.
