Deciding where to live in the latter stage of your life differs from choosing a home when you are younger. In short, it is the first time after a more extended period that you are deciding your life without putting your child first. Whatever your preferences might have been before, you must remember that your health is a significant factor that must be considered in whatever you choose to do during your retirement. When all that is considered, it becomes clear there are plenty of reasons to retire in Orange County, VA. Explore some of them in the following text and see for yourself.
You’ll be able to engage in a lot of outdoor activities to keep you fit
Orange County, VA, is an area with a lot to do. The weather is very diverse, so many different events are happening in the open throughout the year. During winter, people can visit one of the ski resorts nearby and have fun in the snow. Orange County has a festival for every season. For example, the Snow Moon Fest is in its vicinity, which is perfect for everyone. It mainly takes place in March, so you still have time to join all the fun.
When the weather is warmer, the residents and visitors can attend some of the many wine-tasting events. Naturally, barbeque has its festival for the fans of this type of meat – and there are many. Generally, this part of Virginia resides in wonderful nature. Everyone who lives there has a chance to explore daily.
The slow pace of life will let you relax
One of the biggest reasons to retire in Orange County, VA, is that this part of the world offers peace. Most cities and villages here have few residents who are not packed like sardines in large skyscrapers. Everything is nearby and because of all that, there is no need to be in a hurry or to feel tense. Such easy access to nature Orange County provides allows its residents to use one of the healthiest anti-depressants – peaceful outdoor walks.
Generally, the pace of life is slow here, and everyone is bound to relax and take it easy. In some later years, this aspect is essential to keep one’s sanity. You could even move there in a relaxed manner. When it comes to packing for seniors, a stress-free process is possible, and it’s worth trying in that direction.
People can afford more comfortable homes there
The real estate market in Orange County, VA, is more favorable and less harsh for the wallet when compared to many others. That means you might be able to afford your first home here or a bigger one that you had. Owning a home is a dream of many, and being older doesn’t mean you have to give up that dream. That kind of investment is never a waste, especially if you have children or other relatives to whom you want to leave the property. When you own a home, the feeling is slightly more satisfying than in a rental.
For starters, decorating something that is entirely yours is inspiring. Those feeling a bit without a purpose in their retirement days can take up a project like this and feel much better. Besides, any mental stimulation, primarily project-based, is highly beneficial for brain health.
One of the reasons to retire in Orange County, VA, is that you’ll feel safe there
Safety is usually much higher in less densely inhabited areas. Consequently, in Orange County, VA, crime rates are much lower. There’s a good chance you’ll get to know your new neighbors well and half of the community too. Constant social contact increases the safety factor of any individual. Also, there’s not as much traffic as in metropolitan areas. That is relevant for individuals with impaired mobility that can’t run across the street as vigorously.
You can put your belongings in rented storage for an utterly carefree feeling. Miami Movers for Less claim people have resolved two issues: They got rid of the stress of someone robbing them of some of their stuff and decluttered their living space for a more comfortable everyday life. If that seems like something perfect for you, consider that option.
There are some great neighborhoods for senior living
This part of Virginia is proven to be great for senior living. Here are several communities that stand out as the best ones for this purpose:
Lake of the Woods. With a population of approximately 8,500 people, the peace and a sense of living surrounded by a big family are guaranteed. The area has two pools and many parks to engage in enough healthy physical activity. Most that lived there would gladly come back again later in life.
Orange. With an even smaller population than Lake of the Woods, Orange is the capital of slow living but with enough modern amenities. This little area is very safe, so you can sleep soundly there.
Gordonsville. Everyone that lives in this smallest town on our list knows each other. Its residents are very caring, so you’ll never feel alone even though it is a tiny town. For retirees that prefer absolute relaxation and this type of closeness to people, it’s a perfect place to move.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, many reasons exist to retire in Orange County, VA. What may seem a bit too slow to thrill-seeking teenagers is heaven for those that want to savor the days in perfect peace. And what matters a lot is that you don’t have to worry too much about your safety. The nature of towns in this area offers the feeling of belonging to a big, diverse family that cares for you. And in reality, that is the actual truth of how things are.

However, there are a couple of places in Orange County, VA, for dog owners where you can have the best of both worlds. You will keep your pet happy while at the same time living near all the amenities you will ever need. With all these things in mind, this town is worth considering as a potential new home for you and your best friend.
Lake of the Woods
One of the best and top-rated places in Orange County, VA, for dog owners has to be Lake of the Woods. This community has the largest population of all the towns in Orange County. In Lake of the Woods, you will have everything you need as a dog owner. This location is excellent as you will never be bored with so many different things to do. In Lake of the Woods, you get everything you can find in a big town, but you still stay near nature. So, if you are outgoing, this is the best choice for you. Locust Grove
However, if you are looking to move away from the crowds and find a peaceful place for yourself and your dog, Locust Grove may be the right choice. In this small Orange County town, you can stay away from the busy lifestyle and just spend time doing outdoor activities. You will be able to give your dog the life they deserve. In Locust Grove, you can find great houses with large backyards. This affordable Virginia real estate is perfect for dog owners, especially if you have more than one dog. If you’re moving to Locust Grove, but your home is not move-in ready, don’t worry. Experts from A2B Moving and Storage advise you to put your things into storage until you finish setting up your new home. Also, you can find a temporary home for you and your dog until the move-in day arrives.
Gordonsville is another excellent choice for dog owners
As someone who loves animals, you will also love living in the town of Gordonsville in Orange County. In Gordonsville, you can go horseback riding at one of the farms or equestrian centers. Gordonsville is in Orange County, just at the border with Louisa County. So you will have easy access to the amenities in both counties. This place is perfect if you love taking your dog on camping trips. The stunning forests and available campgrounds nearby will give you and your pet a chance to spend a lot of time in nature. You can help your dog stay healthy by taking them for long walks in Gordonsville. As a bonus, you will also be able to live a healthy lifestyle once you relocate to Gordonsville.
Moving to Orange County with pets
Finding that perfect Virginia home and finally receiving the keys is one of the best feelings in the world. However, being faced with a long-distance relocation can take away some of the excitement. There are so many different things to do before the moving day arrives. And relocating with pets can be even more difficult. They won’t understand what’s happening, especially if this is your first time relocating with your dog. That’s why organizing and taking things slow are the keys to a successful relocation with any pet. When it comes to successfully relocating with pets, it’s all about preparing well.
Take your time when you pack for the move. That will lower the chances of your dog stressing out during packing. If you wish to move with the help of professional movers, it may be best to leave your dog with a professional pet sitter or a friend they know. You can pick up your dog once the movers take your things to your new Virginia home. Your dog will probably be confused to see your things gone, but at least they won’t be stressed from meeting too many strangers. All this will help them through the process and make any long-distance relocation easier. Once they arrive at their new home, they will need some time to adjust. But, with the great nature, Orange County has, this confusing period will be over in no time.

”Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it” Santayana once said. And he was right. It’s important to think about this sentence now more than ever. Orange County is (if we have the liberty to say it) perhaps one of the capitols of history in America. There is a lot to see and even more to learn. Are you wondering where to start? Check out some of the places from this history lover’s guide to Orange County, VA.
Start at the Orange Train Station
The train in literature often symbolizes an important journey. Therefore, the Orange Train Station can be a perfect place to start your journey to getting more profound knowledge about American history hidden in this beautiful part of Virginia. Trains changed the face of business in the United States in the early twentieth century. Having been constructed in 1910, the Orange Train Station played a crucial role in the county’s continued existence and development.
Although the Colonial Revival-style structure is no longer used for passenger transportation, it is nevertheless worth a visit since it houses the Orange County Visitors Center. The Visitor Center is open all seven days of the week. It’s kind of a crossroads for all the visitors. So, buying a vacation home near it can be a great investment.
Visit Wilderness Battlefield
The sad cost of the Civil War is memorialized in the Wilderness Battlefield, located in the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park. Guests have the option of:
Vehicle excursions
Self-guided hikes
Visits to historic battlegrounds
To an inexperienced eye, it may seem like an ordinary field in the village. But it’s so much more. Every rock and a little piece of grass hides great sorrow but also lessons for the generations to come. Make sure to listen to the old trees’ whispers and spread the word of wisdom to be cherished in the future.
Ellwood Manor is an important part of it
Ellwood Manor, which stands tall on the Wilderness Battlefield, was the command center for the Union’s right wing. There is a walking route and displays that will appeal to visitors of all ages at this historic property. Follow Route 20 to the Ellwood Manor entrance and soak in all it has to offer.
Exchange Hotel Museum was a place of hope
This structure, which opened in 1860 as a hotel, later served as a hospital for more than 70,000 service members from both the Union and the Confederate forces. This is the only surviving hospital from the Civil War era in Virginia. At the moment, you can visit it only on selected Saturdays during the month. But, seeing it and experiencing the place of life-saving and hope is definitely worth the extra effort.
The Germanna Fort Visitor Center will take your breath away
The Germanna Fort Visitor Center, library, museum, and memorial garden were built to commemorate the arrival of the first German settlers to Virginia in 1714. Also, you can take advantage of the 170 acres of woodland behind the school and the Rapidan River access by visiting the Siegen Forest paths.
You may fall in love with it
Many people fall in love with this region because of it and decide to move here. However, the whole process can be a bit overwhelming, and some choose not to pursue their dreams because of all the fuss. In order to make relocation less stressful and actually enjoy the process, it’s best to find reliable movers and let them handle all the heavy lifting. That way, you’ll be free to enjoy all the hidden gems near Germana Fort.
James Madison’s Montpelier deserves its place in history lover’s guide to Orange County
Historic site commemorating the life and times of James Madison, a key figure in the creation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. You may learn about the area’s history and have fun with your family on one of Montpelier’s guided tours, family activities, or hiking trails. Also, if you’re a DC commuter (and a history lover), this place can be quite a treat for you.
However, this big mansion holds the darker side of American history too. This residence offers a colorful insight into the period of slavery. Even though it may not be pleasant to revisit our ancestors’ mistakes, it’s important to learn and experience first-hand the history of the rich and the poor. The history of men in power and the history of the powerless. As only knowledge is the power that will help us make a better future.
Barboursville ruins and vineyards
Thomas Jefferson built this opulent palace for Governor James Barbour. Unfortunately, on Christmas Day 1884, a fire destroyed it. Ruins at Barboursville are preserved as a historical site and are visible amid the grapes. As seen from a distance, this site can be a perfect metaphor for both faces of American history – the richness and the poverty and the potential to grow. Even though this burnt mansion isn’t quite conventionally part of the holiday decorating contest, it can be even more worth visiting and being a part of it, even for a day.
Final thoughts
Orange County in Virginia holds many treasures of American history. And we don’t mean the gold or the diamonds. The amount of knowledge circling between the walls of all the residences mentioned above is what is truly valuable. If you have the privilege to follow this history lover’s guide to Orange County, make sure to listen. Listen to all of these places while they’re telling you their story. Listen to the locals and ask them where to find more secret historical gems of this region. Soak in all the knowledge, as only knowledge is power. Take the opportunity to get mentally stronger so you’ll, one day, make the future worth fighting for.

As summer has begun to wind down, the fall activities have started to arise! Did you know that Liberty Mills Farm offers the largest corn maze in Virginia at 34 acres?? Their maze consists of four separate trails perfect for spending the day adventuring through each or picking the best one to fit your group. The Story Maze is a quick 30-minute trail with story stations to help navigate your way. The Trivia Maze provides a medium, slightly more difficult trail, lasting approximately 45-60 minutes, and offers trivia based on the theme of the year. The Hole Punch Maze really takes it to the next level as this could take you 2-3 hours to find all 21 stations to get your card punched and also find the yummy ice cream along the way! The last and final maze is the Myster Maze with no maps, only you, your company, and a sense of adventure, the length of time varies greatly, however, plan to spend at least an hour here! The Corn Mazes will open for the season on Saturday, September 10th, 2022. Tickets for all the different corn mazes may be purchased here once Liberty Mills has opened the tickets for purchase. Liberty Mills Farm is located at 9166 Liberty Mills Rd, Somerset VA 22972.
