Civic Club to Meet at LOW Fire and Rescue Station

Civic Club to Meet at LOW Fire and Rescue Station

By Neil Buttimer, LOW Civic Club

The next LOW Civic Club meeting is set for 7 pm, Tuesday, September 20, at the Lake of the Woods Fire and Rescue (F&R) station. F&R volunteers will be on hand to show off their recently acquired fire engine, other fire apparatus, and an ambulance, and give some hints to prepare for the hurricane and upcoming winter seasons. Our neighbor volunteers of the Lake of the Woods Fire & Rescue Company are on alert 24/7 to respond to emergencies at LOW and the surrounding area.

In addition to stocking up on water, blankets, and batteries, we will hear about ways to improve communication both before and during emergency situations. For example, CodeRED is the Orange County Emergency Management Department’s new emergency and mass notification system that allows the County to send urgent messages to home and cell phones.

CodeRED is a simple way to get urgent messages about natural disasters including severe storms, tornadoes, floods, or man-made disasters, such as chemical spills, bio-hazards, and Amber Alerts.

Another new system is Smart911, which allows citizens to provide the additional details that 9-1-1 call takers may need in order to assist them during an emergency.  In just a few minutes, Orange County residents can create a Safety Profile that can include details about medical conditions, medications, vehicles, pets, and even emergency contacts that the 9-1-1 call center can use during a crisis call.

Since we will be meeting at the F&R Station, we recommend bringing a lawn chair. Also, if you have not yet contributed to the F&R Annual Fund, a F&R volunteer will be on-hand to accept your donation.

“Be Concerned, Be Informed, Be Involved” is the motto of the LOW Civic Club, which hosts monthly speakers and provides an open forum where homeowners can learn about issues that affect their lives, interests, and investment in the LOW community.

All Civic Club meetings are open to all residents. We hope to see you on Tuesday, September 20.

Political Sign Regulations in Lake of the Woods

by Pat Licata, REALTOR
With the elections upon us, it’s the appropriate time to talk politics! No, I don’t mean about which candidate you like…I mean the politics of placing signs in your Lake of the Woods yard! The official date you can place political signs in your yard is Tuesday, September 27. Remember, all signs must be removed by Wednesday, November 9. Please adhere to the following rule governing the usage of signs:
Regulation V.
H. SIGNS
3. Political Signs: Only one political sign per issue or candidate, no larger than 4 square feet may be displayed on any residential lot. Political signs may be displayed no earlier than six weeks prior to an election and must be removed the day after the election. Political signs on Association property are not allowed except for two exceptions. The first exception is on Election Day. The second exception is on the day of a political event at which the candidates will appear. For both of these exceptions the signs must be in an area designated by the General Manager.

LOW Annual Art Show October 15-16, 2016

By Pat Licata, REALTOR
One of my very favorite fall events, The Annual Art Show, sponsored by the LOW Visual Arts Council, is fast approaching! Held October 15th and 16th, this fun annual event allows local artists, both professional and amateur, to showcase their work and gives you the opportunity to take it home!
artgraphicGet ready to view works from artists of past years: Pete Brown’s oil paintings, Bob Gibson’s photos, Helga Birdsong’s floral arrangements, and my friend, Patty Bell’s, watercolors. Patty is also a swan enthusiast and has been my partner in a few swan rescues. If you’ve never seen her swan watercolors, you simply must…They are stunning! Nate Smith, who amazed us with driftwood sailboats last year, plans to expand his exhibit for 2016. Martha Manigross, a new resident who will be participating for the first time, creates wearable art and wall hangings.
Forms are available in the Holcomb Building lower level foyer and at the Community Center if you would like to participate. Please contact Jan Moore at 972-9355 or Sallie Wallace at 972-0412 if you have questions.

Check out Updated Fareways Cafe

By Pat Licata, REALTOR
bloody maryJust a friendly reminder to check out the newly remodeled Lake of the Woods’ Fareways Cafe. If you haven’t been there since the remodel, come on down and enjoy all-day breakfast, salads, burgers, and sandwiches, while enjoying a great view of the golf course from the porch before you’ll be “stuck” inside enjoying the cozy fireplace! New food, new drinks, and new atmosphere abound. My friend and client, Ginny, had breakfast and a great Bloody Mary there today!
