Political Sign Regulations in Lake of the Woods

by Pat Licata, REALTOR
With the elections upon us, it’s the appropriate time to talk politics! No, I don’t mean about which candidate you like…I mean the politics of placing signs in your Lake of the Woods yard! The official date you can place political signs in your yard is Tuesday, September 27. Remember, all signs must be removed by Wednesday, November 9. Please adhere to the following rule governing the usage of signs:
Regulation V.
H. SIGNS
3. Political Signs: Only one political sign per issue or candidate, no larger than 4 square feet may be displayed on any residential lot. Political signs may be displayed no earlier than six weeks prior to an election and must be removed the day after the election. Political signs on Association property are not allowed except for two exceptions. The first exception is on Election Day. The second exception is on the day of a political event at which the candidates will appear. For both of these exceptions the signs must be in an area designated by the General Manager.

By Pat Licata, REALTOR
One of my very favorite fall events, The Annual Art Show, sponsored by the LOW Visual Arts Council, is fast approaching! Held October 15th and 16th, this fun annual event allows local artists, both professional and amateur, to showcase their work and gives you the opportunity to take it home!
artgraphicGet ready to view works from artists of past years: Pete Brown’s oil paintings, Bob Gibson’s photos, Helga Birdsong’s floral arrangements, and my friend, Patty Bell’s, watercolors. Patty is also a swan enthusiast and has been my partner in a few swan rescues. If you’ve never seen her swan watercolors, you simply must…They are stunning! Nate Smith, who amazed us with driftwood sailboats last year, plans to expand his exhibit for 2016. Martha Manigross, a new resident who will be participating for the first time, creates wearable art and wall hangings.
Forms are available in the Holcomb Building lower level foyer and at the Community Center if you would like to participate. Please contact Jan Moore at 972-9355 or Sallie Wallace at 972-0412 if you have questions.

5 Home Selling Tips for LOW Homeowners

By Pat Licata-REALTOR
Selling your home may be an idea you are seriously considering, but that does not mean you are ready to put your home on the market just yet. You may be waiting to pay off your mortgage; you may be waiting for the kids to move out; for the Spring selling season to hit Lake of the Woods (it’s not necessary to wait–I promise); or you may not be ready yet to part with all the memories you have made in this home.
But that does not mean you don’t have to start preparing to sell.

What to Consider Before Listing Your Home

personal belongings cluttered in a home's attic, a DO NOT home selling tipMany home sellers feel overwhelmed when they are preparing to sell their home for a number of reasons: There is the daunting task of decluttering, the sometimes unexpected repairs that have to be made, and the seemingly endless list of squeaky doors and minor fixes that buyers would notice almost immediately.
And all of this happens in a short time. (Read this Popular Mechanics article about what surprises this first-time home seller experienced to get an idea of what can happen.)

Prepare Now, Feel Less Stressed Later

You are in the perfect position right now to do what many home sellers do not have the chance to — slowly start to get your home in order. Here are five home selling tips you can try now so you won’t feel overwhelmed when the time is right for you.

1. Start with the Necessary Repairs

Free yourself from future stress by making any major repairs now, whether that is repairing the HVAC or replacing the hot water heater.

If you want to give your walls a fresh coat of paint, opt for more neutral colors. During home showings, neutral colors and décor make it easier for home buyers to picture themselves living in your home, which is your ultimate goal. Don’t use builder white. Two of my favorite are Benjamin Moore’s bleaker beige for warmer tones and revere pewter for cooler ones.

3. Start Decluttering Now

Home sellers often find that decluttering is one of the more frustrating and overwhelming tasks, but if you start cleaning the clutter now, you will thank yourself later. A good rule of thumb: If you don’t love something and use it, lose it.

4. Deep Clean Your Home Periodically

  • cleaning fixtures and light switch covers
  • fixing broken doorbells
  • repairing squeaky doors
  • dusting high and low
  • cleaning floors and windows

5. Refresh Your Front Entrance

During the home selling process, making a fantastic first impression is the key to getting buyers in the door. Refresh your home’s curb appeal by purchasing a new welcome mat, painting the front door, and polishing or replacing the doorknob.

Saved by the Bell

Both Beau and I found ourselves in a precarious situation recently. And I have my beloved Carl, the swan that adopted me and ignited my passion for wildlife and writing, to thank for my having been in that position at all. I, who have only been in the lake once in 4 years (unintentionally, I might add; but that is another story!), was at Clubhouse beach with shoes off and pant legs rolled up, ready to go into the lake on a cold, windy November day to rescue a swan named Beau. Fortunately, we were both saved by the bell…fellow resident and swan enthusiast Patty Bell, that is!
Like most swan rescue operations in which I’ve been involved, they begin with a phone call. It was Patty who called this time to tell me about her regular, Beau, who had shown up at her house sporting an unfashionable necklace of sorts. Upon further discussing Beau with Patty, I realized that her Beau was my Jaws, a name I affectionately bestowed upon him due to his recognizable underbite (see photo). After a few attempts by Patty to remove the unwanted accessory, Beau became spooked and no longer would allow her to get close to him. The following day, Beau didn’t arrive at Patty’s home at dawn, as was the customary routine. And so the “hunt” began.
Postings on facebook, emails to residents with the help of another fellow resident and swan enthusiast Marge Eales, and driving around to various locations in search of Beau didn’t produce any sightings. So Patty, with the help of her husband, John, did a sweep of the lake on their pontoon boat. Surely enough, they spotted Beau at Clubhouse beach! Upon finding him, Patty called me. And so the “fun” began.
Beau toyed with us repeatedly for a while…coming close enough to the beach for us to think we had a chance to nab him before swimming away. As I was coming to grips with the fact that I would have to go in the water after him, I thought of a way to entice him onto the beach. I ran to the Clubhouse as quickly as possible, and Joey was right there to help save the day! She gave me a dinner roll, which Beau, like the residents who frequent the Clubhouse, couldn’t resist. One bite of that roll, and Beau belonged to us! He followed the crumbs we spread far enough onto the sand that I knew I would thankfully be spared the cold water.
Surely enough, with patience, I found myself in position to lunge forward and grab his neck. Patty quickly secured his flapping wings and pulled the plastic ring up over his head! Mission accomplished!!
My co-worker, Carol, realized that Beau’s necklace was actually the hard plastic housing or casing that surrounds a light on a boat. What most likely happened is that Beau, while feeding on the bottom of the lake, picked it up over his head accidentally. This could have had tragic consequences, as Beau could have easily gotten the plastic caught on something. So please…if you see any debris in the lake, take a moment or two to remove it.
It takes a community to look after our non-human residents, too! Won’t you please help us by joining our informal “wildlife watch” group? If interested, please email me at plicata@mris.com.

Until next time…”It’s another beautiful day at the lake!”
