Brandon Groome grew up in Mineral and had a career as a firefighter and paramedic. His wife Valerie is from Ferncliff and worked as a general manager at the Best Western, Zion Crossroads. In April 2017 the Louisa natives made the decision to leave their jobs behind and work together, purchasing Lake Anna Nursery from its original owners. Both feel that their past experiences in serving others will help them succeed as business owners – and they’re also happy to be more available for their three young children.
The Groomes have maintained the onsite retail nursery and garden center, but have also expanded into some exciting new areas – now providing residential and commercial property management services and landscape/hardscape design and installation. In October of 2017, the business added a full service florist on site and also plans to have an e-commerce business up and running soon!
Lake Anna Nursery grows all of its own annuals, hanging baskets and perennials. The Garden Center also carries a full line of trees and shrubs, the bulk of which come from Virginia and North Carolina sources.

This part of The Licata group history started about a year ago when a client approached us about selling a home in Arlington. A natural inclination would have been for the Licata Group to refer the client to one of the thousand or so Keller Williams Capital Properties agents. Don’t miss Lake Anna’s 2019 Brewfest happening in Spotyslvania right down the road from us here in Lake of the Woods!
Saturday, May 18th from 11 am to 5pm at the Lake Anna State Park (6800 Lawyers Rd, Spotsylvania VA 22551), Lake Anna will be hosting their sixth annual Brewfest right on their shores. VIP admission will start at 11 am, general admission begins at 12 pm, and the event concludes at 5 pm for everyone.
There will be over 30 different local and regional breweries featuring more than 65 different beers, cider, wine and even moonshine! There will be a variety of over 30 food vendors to enjoy lunch or early dinner while enjoying your alcoholic beverage tastings. What’s beer and dinner without music? There will be live music and even some games to get you through the day!
Of course this is a family friendly event and the proceeds from this Brewfest will help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Friends of Lake Anna State Park.
Tickets are currently $20 each for super early bird purchases and includes a commemorative pint glass with 10 sampling tickets and access to the event. Additional sampling tickets can be purchased, CASH, at the event for $1 each. VIP super early bird tickets are $40 and include the commemorative pint glass with unlimited samples, entry at 11 am as well as general access to the whole event. And if you’re planning on drinking, don’t forget about your designated driver! Their tickets are only $10 each (this price also applied to anyone 16-20 years in age). It’s a fact: You feel better when the space around you is organized and free and clear of clutter. There are some easy steps you take to tackle getting the job done.
Include everyone in the house in the project. Talk about the plan and how to execute.
Divide and conquer: Pick small sections of a room and work that till complete, then move on. It will be less overwhelming that way.
Clean for 10 minutes every day. Pick your time and see what you can accomplish in small burst.
Unpack all bags that come into the house immediately.
Divide all unwanted stuff in 4 piles or boxes: Keep-Sell-Donate-Trash
Everything has a home inside and outside. Make sure it goes there!
If family members do not want your treasures, find out which organizations could really use them and donate.
Pare down on paper and photos. Sort through the piles and shred what you can.
Be realistic about your belongings. If you will never wear it, use it or love it again, get rid of it!

No matter where you live – the deer are here! Watch out when you’re driving home on Route 3 to Locust Grove or Lake of the Woods. Be especially careful at dawn and night on the back roads (particularly on the super winding ones) where they can jump out at any given moment. Drive slower and use your high beams and honk your horn to scare them. I’ve heard there are ‘deer whistles’ but many have doubts of their reliability. If it appears your car is going to make impact with the deer – you should avoid swerving, as more accidents occur this way. You never know what can happen, so of course always wear your seat belt! If you thought, you have seen an increase in deer recently – you are not going winter-crazy! It is mating season, so you will see more deer along the normal tree-lined Route 3 to the Locust Grove area, even on the way to Culpeper. Be cautious and alert! There are more animals to look out for then deer! Sadly, this month I have seen so many other small creatures alongside the road that have crossed the rainbow bridge. On my way to work this morning, coming from Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania to Locust Grove, I counted no less than 5 small animals on the side of the road whose lives were taken too soon due to high activity on the roadway. It may be difficult to avoid hitting a critter while driving, especially when it’s only a 2-lane road, you can try to prevent impact by being aware of your surroundings before they come out on the road. Although you may want to swerve to avoid hitting them, if it’s too late – it’s better for your safety and the safety of others on the road to keep moving forward. Drive slower on less lit roads, especially winding back roads. Use your high-beams and your horns! Stay safe and remember there’s more than just you on the road (or the woods) parallel to the roads.
