Autozone is now open in front of the Dollar General by Lake of the Woods, in Locust Grove, Virginia.
How will this impact our community? Although, this is a sure sign that Locust Grove is growing, do we need and want corporate businesses taking over our tight-knit community? We already have a Walmart in front of the Somerset community…What more will this bring to our town? What’s next to come?
Don’t get me wrong Autozone will be great and convenient, but I’m torn between enjoying the new, quickly accessible locations (no more driving to Fredericksburg or Culpeper) and continuing to support the local businesses. To be fair, we do not have a local auto parts store, although we do have many small automotive shops in the Locust Grove stretch that can usually order a part, if necessary.
Many of us had been looking forward to a delicious new restaurant! I’ve overheard many talks about how splendid it would be if we had a Chik-fil-A right here in our neighborhood, or how about a Ruby Tuesday’s or Applebee’s to give some more options? I know we have Tokyo, El Vaquero and Clearwater, to name a few, but this could bring some more variety to a very repetitive location. While I am a huge supporter of local businesses, sometimes it’s nice to have something known and common; that being said – I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to a new, larger-sized family run restaurant, especially a well-run steakhouse!
All this being said, more businesses coming to the area, especially commercial, is sure to bring more homes and people to the area too. More businesses also equal more jobs for the current and future residents of Orange County. Are we the next Fredericksburg, Virginia? Many people that live here, especially in the Lake of the Woods community have settled here to get away from the everyday hustle-and-bustle of the city life. Many have second homes here in the lake that may currently live and work in the big cities (most notably, Washington D.C, Arlington and Fairfax) and they enjoy the peace of the country lifestyle on weekends or vacations. This is their escape. I suppose if the Locust Grove area continues to expand with new businesses and homes, some people and their families will begin to move further out into the rural areas that are Rhoadesville, Unionville and Orange, just to name a few.

No matter where you live – the deer are here! Watch out when you’re driving home on Route 3 to Locust Grove or Lake of the Woods. Be especially careful at dawn and night on the back roads (particularly on the super winding ones) where they can jump out at any given moment. Drive slower and use your high beams and honk your horn to scare them. I’ve heard there are ‘deer whistles’ but many have doubts of their reliability. If it appears your car is going to make impact with the deer – you should avoid swerving, as more accidents occur this way. You never know what can happen, so of course always wear your seat belt! If you thought, you have seen an increase in deer recently – you are not going winter-crazy! It is mating season, so you will see more deer along the normal tree-lined Route 3 to the Locust Grove area, even on the way to Culpeper. Be cautious and alert! There are more animals to look out for then deer! Sadly, this month I have seen so many other small creatures alongside the road that have crossed the rainbow bridge. On my way to work this morning, coming from Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania to Locust Grove, I counted no less than 5 small animals on the side of the road whose lives were taken too soon due to high activity on the roadway. It may be difficult to avoid hitting a critter while driving, especially when it’s only a 2-lane road, you can try to prevent impact by being aware of your surroundings before they come out on the road. Although you may want to swerve to avoid hitting them, if it’s too late – it’s better for your safety and the safety of others on the road to keep moving forward. Drive slower on less lit roads, especially winding back roads. Use your high-beams and your horns! Stay safe and remember there’s more than just you on the road (or the woods) parallel to the roads. You don’t have to travel back in time to enjoy a drive-in movie theater anymore! They’re back and they’re here to stay. If you’ve never been to one before or have kids or grand-kids that have never been, it is worth taking them to a movie experience like this. Both theaters I will tell you about are very family-friendly and have parks available for children to play while waiting for the movies to begin. Only an hour and a few minutes away from Lake of the Woods, Virginia is the Goochland Drive-In Theater, located at 4344 Old Fredericksburg Rd, Hadensville, VA 23067. This theater was started many years ago by a young family that wanted an affordable, family-friendly environment for the community to enjoy. About an additional 30-40 minute drive than the Goochland Drive-In from Lake of the Woods is the Family Drive-In located at: 5890 Valley Pike, Stephens City, VA 22655. They opened in 1956 and are continuing 63 years of operation as of next year – wow! So really- they never “left”. Both drive-ins offer two screens as well as the option for double-features or single features, and they are pet-friendly! They both allow you to bring folding chairs and blankets, if you’d rather sit outside of your vehicle and offer portable radios to listen to the movie. They both have snack bars with classic snacks and drinks available for purchase. Goochland Drive-In does not allow outside foods to be brought in, while the Family Drive-In will allow outside foods for a small fee. Goochland’s prices for adults and children 12+ are $8.50 each compared to the Family Drive-In at $8 each for the same ages. Kids 4-11 $4 each at both. For Family Drive-In’s single feature price and Sundays, it’s $7 for adults and children 12 and up, while children 3-11 are $3 each. What a bargain! Double feature movies at a DRIVE-IN theater for the same price as a 1 movie ticket at a regular movie theater, how can you even compare?! Each have their own rules and policies that you can find on their website along with any frequently asked questions. Unfortunately, the season has come to an end, of course, due to colder weather in December, January and February, in Virginia. The season will start again in March.
