No matter where you live – the deer are here! Watch out when you’re driving home on Route 3 to Locust Grove or Lake of the Woods. Be especially careful at dawn and night on the back roads (particularly on the super winding ones) where they can jump out at any given moment. Drive slower and use your high beams and honk your horn to scare them. I’ve heard there are ‘deer whistles’ but many have doubts of their reliability. If it appears your car is going to make impact with the deer – you should avoid swerving, as more accidents occur this way. You never know what can happen, so of course always wear your seat belt! If you thought, you have seen an increase in deer recently – you are not going winter-crazy! It is mating season, so you will see more deer along the normal tree-lined Route 3 to the Locust Grove area, even on the way to Culpeper. Be cautious and alert! There are more animals to look out for then deer! Sadly, this month I have seen so many other small creatures alongside the road that have crossed the rainbow bridge. On my way to work this morning, coming from Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania to Locust Grove, I counted no less than 5 small animals on the side of the road whose lives were taken too soon due to high activity on the roadway. It may be difficult to avoid hitting a critter while driving, especially when it’s only a 2-lane road, you can try to prevent impact by being aware of your surroundings before they come out on the road. Although you may want to swerve to avoid hitting them, if it’s too late – it’s better for your safety and the safety of others on the road to keep moving forward. You don’t have to travel back in time to enjoy a drive-in movie theater anymore! They’re back and they’re here to stay. If you’ve never been to one before or have kids or grand-kids that have never been, it is worth taking them to a movie experience like this. Both theaters I will tell you about are very family-friendly and have parks available for children to play while waiting for the movies to begin. Only an hour and a few minutes away from Lake of the Woods, Virginia is the Goochland Drive-In Theater, located at 4344 Old Fredericksburg Rd, Hadensville, VA 23067. This theater was started many years ago by a young family that wanted an affordable, family-friendly environment for the community to enjoy. About an additional 30-40 minute drive than the Goochland Drive-In from Lake of the Woods is the Family Drive-In located at: 5890 Valley Pike, Stephens City, VA 22655. They opened in 1956 and are continuing 63 years of operation as of next year – wow! So really- they never “left”. Both drive-ins offer two screens as well as the option for double-features or single features, and they are pet-friendly! They both allow you to bring folding chairs and blankets, if you’d rather sit outside of your vehicle and offer portable radios to listen to the movie. They both have snack bars with classic snacks and drinks available for purchase. Goochland Drive-In does not allow outside foods to be brought in, while the Family Drive-In will allow outside foods for a small fee. Goochland’s prices for adults and children 12+ are $8.50 each compared to the Family Drive-In at $8 each for the same ages. Kids 4-11 $4 each at both. For Family Drive-In’s single feature price and Sundays, it’s $7 for adults and children 12 and up, while children 3-11 are $3 each. What a bargain! Double feature movies at a DRIVE-IN theater for the same price as a 1 movie ticket at a regular movie theater, how can you even compare?! This savings idea was something fun and creative I saw and decided to try at the beginning of the 2018 year. I started on exactly January 1st 2018. To begin, find something that can hold many coins and cash! I used a mason jar as my designated saving jar. You could use whatever you wanted – have fun and decorate it in a way unique to you. The savings plan goes like this: on the first day of the year you put one penny in your jar. Day two: two pennies, day three: three pennies and so on and so forth. So for example on March 1st (the 59th day of the year) you are up to depositing 59 cents in your container. You deposit what ever the corresponding day of the year it is. So I continued this until November 1st and at this point, if I had continued I would be putting in $3.00 and up daily!! If you continue until the end of year, you will have a lot more. I wrapped all the coins I had collected from January 1st to November 1st and counted all the money and took $304.00 to the bank. It was an easy and fun way to save, and I had extra money for holiday shopping!! I recommend you try it, and let us know if it works out for you! 2018 Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Lake of the Woods

It was only one day (so far) – for almost an hour that our admin team went outside of the safe and warm Licata Group office we work in, to go around our building and clean up the trash build up we have seen. When you pull into the parking lot and see a grocery bag flying by, or an empty abandoned beer bottle left outside our business doors, it’s gross, ugly and so disappointing. All down our business walkway from the Vet’s office at the corner, to the Food Lion at the other end, there are numerous trash cans available in which to dispose trash . It appears some are too lazy to walk to one or simply don’t care. Don’t even go to the back of the office buildings! There is a small “pond” of some sort or maybe just a pool of water that fell and collected into a man-made hole, but all around and in it – garbage – everywhere! It was almost a full hour of us 3 women collecting trash from the parking lots between our building and Burger King, slightly across the way. In that short-time frame, eachof us had collected a FULL bag of trash. How sad. My biggest discovery was the unbelievable amount of grocery bags I had found! Grocery bags DO NOT decompose and many of the bags I found were UNUSED and had been almost buried into the ground. This was after all the rain and storms we had about a week ago, which leads to my next question. How many plastic bags are really buried out there that are killing the ecosystem and our environment? And this is only in our small Locust Grove shopping center – imagine other places! Although we as a team are committed to this project and continue to go out there and clean up our local neighborhood area, it is something, and, of course, better than nothing – but it is not enough! We ALL must come together as a community and commit to opting out of using plastic bags for our groceries and instead purchase and use reusable bags (available at Food Lion and many retail shops), opting for an e-mailed receipt versus a printed receipt, and if you see trash-pick it up! We can all make a small difference in our lives to make a BIG difference in our environment and local community, if we work together.
